Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it. It causes a painful rash which develops into itchy blisters. It can occur at any age but is most common in people aged over 50 years.
From October 2013 patients aged 70 ( on 1st Sept 2013 ) will be eligible for the Zostavax vaccine on the NHS.
There will also be a ‘catch up ‘ programme for those patients aged 79 years ( on 1st Sept 2013). We apologize for the limited availability of this vaccination, but this is the stated government policy. We are only able to access a limited supply of the vaccine so these criteria will be adhered to.
