Respiratory Disease

OVERVIEW

We aim to support all patients with breathing problems through personal GP support, nurse specialist clinics and close links with community respiratory nurses and local consultant chest physicians.

ICP AIMS:

ASTHMA

  • To diagnose accurately and advise self management plans with a minimum of annual review in asthma clinics.
  • Management according to BTS guidelines

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease - also known as 'Chronic Bronchitis' or

           'Emphysema' )

  • To make early and accurate diagnosis with spirometry and advise on treatment with personal treatment plans.
  • Annual monitoring & review of treatment plan
  • Management according to BTS guidelines

SMOKING

  • To actively offer advice and smoking cessation therapies to all patients with' at risk' conditions and all others who want to stop.

VACCINATIONS

  • Influenza- annual vaccination to all respiratory patients.
  • Pneumococcus - to all 'at risk' patients.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ?

  • Initial assessment & referral to Respiratory clinic by GP.

IN CLINIC

  • Examination : Height/weight & Blood pressure
  • PEFR - useful for monitoring asthma
  • Sprirometry - usesful for diagnosis & monitoring COPD
  • Pulse Oxygen %
  • Inhaler technique check & advise from nurse
